Ski Tips Series #5: Must-Know Safety Advice Before You Hit the Slopes

Many ski accidents are totally avoidable—don’t let your fun turn into disaster! Be fully prepared before you hit the slopes. Here are the top 10 Ski Safety Rules, officially set by the Japan Ski Safety Countermeasures Council. Take a good look before your trip 👇👇

1️⃣ Whether skiing or snowboarding, always be considerate of others. Respect everyone and don’t do anything dangerous or that could harm others.

2️⃣ Adjust and control your speed based on your own skill level, weather, and snow conditions.

3️⃣ Always keep a safe distance from other skiers or riders in front of you to avoid accidents.

4️⃣ Skiers ahead of you have the right of way. When overtaking, always leave enough space.

5️⃣ Before starting your run, check your surroundings and yield to anyone already coming down the slope.

6️⃣ Never stop in the middle of the slope. If you fall, move to the side of the trail as soon as possible.

7️⃣ When climbing up or walking down the slope, always use the side—don’t block others.

8️⃣ Follow all posted signs and trail markers. Pay attention to difficulty, route, direction, and any closures or warnings.

9️⃣ If you see an accident, help the injured and call for rescue. Place your skis crossed above the incident area as a warning for others.

🔟 In case of an accident, no matter who’s at fault, exchange contact information before leaving to follow up later.
