Ski Tips Series #3: How to Dress Warm and Stay Comfortable on the Slopes
(Image note: Photo from Chase4Snow instructors’ last season trip)
No matter if it’s Japan, New Zealand, or Australia—subzero winters are a real challenge. But that endless snow is just too tempting! Even when you’re shivering, you can’t help but rush outside. Before your trip, you might pack every piece of winter gear until your suitcase is bursting. This time, let’s talk about lightweight, yet warm, snow country dressing hacks!
While snow country is often below zero, don’t worry—places like Southeast Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc.) are wet and cold, and no matter how much you wear, the moisture seems to creep in and make you shiver, even under a pile of blankets. But in Japan, New Zealand, and Australia, it’s a dry cold—so as long as your outerwear is warm and windproof, you don’t need to bundle up like a bear. You’ll stay toasty and stylish!
‼️ Dressing Tips for Ski Resorts ‼️
Outer Layer – A windproof and waterproof jacket. Make sure it covers your butt (or even your thighs/knees for extra warmth).
Mid Layer – A sweater or warm cotton top.
Base Layer – Heattech or thermal underwear.
Pants – Thermal base layer + thick winter pants (jeans are fine if the fabric is right).
Shoes – Waterproof and warm boots; hiking boots or snow boots both work.
Extras – Don’t forget gloves, a hat, and a scarf. Pick something stylish for those photos! If your ears get cold like mine, choose a hat that covers your ears.
When skiing in Niseko, your ski gear is already a huge package—so pack other clothing as light as possible. Otherwise, you’ll have a tough time on transit days! Most accommodations offer washing machines or laundry services, so just bring a few changes of clothes. If you run out, buy some locally—they double as souvenirs! Every year, I grab at least one Niseko-exclusive hoodie or shirt. Japanese limited-edition stuff is irresistible… but my wallet always ends up thinner!
