Ski Tips Series #1: Japan vs Australia
Just when you’re wondering why there’s no snow to ski on, remember—the Southern Hemisphere ski season is just getting started! Coach Phil is currently chasing snow in Australia and sharpening his skills. Let’s hear him share some ski wisdom and join him on the journey to chase snow! 📝⬇️📝⬇️
While riding the lifts, I often chat with students about the differences between ski resorts in Japan and Australia.
Japanese resorts are usually highly developed—trees are cut, rocks are moved, runs are super smooth and there’s not much variation. You won’t find much off-piste skiing in many Japanese resorts.
In contrast, Australia’s ski areas are inside national parks. To reduce environmental impact, they can’t just cut down trees or move rocks, let alone build connector trails or carve out new slopes. Ironically, that means there’s not much difference between off-piste and on-piste—everywhere is kind of wild.
After so many years of skiing, I feel more and more that skiing is really just about humans adapting to the mountain. Every mountain grows a different kind of skier.
For on-piste tourists, Japanese skiers are truly technical masters—charging fast and smooth down the runs. Aussies, on the other hand, are all about courage! Even if their technique isn’t perfect, they’ll happily dive into the trees or search out powder.
No matter who you are, if you keep skiing on mountains, you’ll eventually become a real skier.
It’s my 15th ski season—6 in Australia, 1 in New Zealand, and 8 in Japan. I wonder what kind of skier I’ll become in the end?
