What to Pack for Your First Ski Trip: Beginner Gear Checklist by Chase4Snow
Skiing is a fun and challenging sport, but before you start, it’s important to make sure you have all the essential equipment—safety comes first for maximum enjoyment! Chase4Snow Ski School has prepared a detailed ski equipment checklist to help you get fully prepared before you hit the slopes.
“Equipment You Can Bring or Rent”
All ski rental shops in Japan offer gear for rent. Ski jackets and pants may vary from new to used depending on the shop. Helmets are not always available in sufficient quantities, so please confirm in advance.
- Ski Jacket: A warm, waterproof jacket is a must to protect you from cold and moisture while skiing.
- Ski Pants: Also need to be warm and waterproof to keep your lower body dry and comfortable.
- Helmet: Skiing is an intense sport—wearing a helmet is crucial to protect your head from injury.
- Ski Boots: Professional ski boots offer excellent support and protection.
- Skis/Snowboard: Your skis or snowboard are the core equipment for skiing. Tell the shop your skill level and needs—they’ll help you choose the right board.
“Items Sometimes Available for Rent”
Some shops offer these items and some don’t, so check ahead. For example, at the Annupuri and Hirafu ski centers in Niseko, you can rent goggles and gloves.
- Goggles: Protect your eyes from strong sunlight and snow glare, as well as from wind and snow.
- Ski Gloves: Waterproof, warm gloves keep your hands dry and warm, and provide a better grip.
“Items You Should Prepare Yourself”
These essentials touch your skin and are required for both hygiene and comfort. Always bring your own.
- Face Mask/Neck Warmer: Protects your face and neck from cold wind.
- Base Layer (Moisture-Wicking): Breathable, sweat-wicking base layers keep you dry and comfortable, and prevent catching a chill from sweat.
- Ski Socks: Specialized ski socks offer warmth and must be higher than your boots to prevent discomfort or skin irritation.
- Liner Gloves: For extra-cold days, wear them inside your ski gloves; not always needed every time you ski.
“Recommended Gear for Snowboarders”
Protective gear is hard to find in Japan—bring and try it on before your trip to ensure the best fit and protection.
- Wrist Guards & Knee Pads: Help prevent wrist and knee injuries from falls.
- Padded Shorts: Essential for snowboarders—protect your hips and tailbone.
